The Pokemon series have always been inspired by ancient civilizations. Unowns, Regirock, Regice, Registeel are some examples of Pokemon designed with an ancient motif.
But Tumblr user Monarobot has taken the ancient motif one step further, with his, with this series of fan-made illustrations of various Pokemon infused with the art style of one of the most mysterious ancient civilizations in history, the Mayans.

The Mayan civilization these days are known more for their 2012 doomsday calendar rather than their actual cultural achievements like their literature, art and architecture, most famous of which is the Chichen Itza pyramid in Mexico’s Yucatan region.
Here are the various Pokemon artworks done by Monarobot based on the Mayans’ style.

The Legendary Lugia has a lot in common with the mythical Quetzalcoatl, the legendary Mayan god. Quetzalcoatl is often described as a cross between a snake and a bird and is often called the flying serpent. Serpents have always been associated with dragons, and while not a dragon-type Pokemon, Lugia does look like a combination of a bird and a dragon.
