Sequel to "Gargantia" set to be announced at AnimeJapan

All the details on a sequel to Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet will be revealed at the AnimeJapan 2014 Open Stage, on March 23 at 1 PM. AnimeJapan is a new event combining two former anime conventions in Japan: the Tokyo International Anime Fair and the Anime Contents Expo.

A sequel to Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet had already been announced in October on the series’ official Twitter account, but it neglected to mention whether the sequel would be a full second season, an OVA, or a feature film. Technically, this is an announcement of an addendum to a previous announcement, but we’ll take what we can get.

Gargantia is the story of a soldier from a technologically advanced, warlike society trying to adapt to a mostly submerged future-Earth. It started off strong with a fantastic premise, then got a bit iffy in some people’s books as it drifted toward fanservice and away from plot. It did wind up developing a more substantial storyline, but it also had a fairly satisfying ending, making it tough to follow up.

There are a lot of concepts related to the premise that still haven’t been explored, so hopefully the writers will take the sequel in an interesting new direction rather than just padding it with more interactions between the scantily clad characters.
