Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement movie, The Wind Rises takes in yet another prestigious accolade as it wins the Japan Academy Prize’s Animation of the Year award. The prestigious award was given by the Nippon Academy-shou Association for excellence in Japanese film making.
The award was accepted by Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki who jokingly said he should not have made to movies in the same year. He was referring of to Studio Ghibli’s other 2013 movie, “The Tale of Princess Kaguya” which was also nominated for Animation of the Year.
The Wind Rises was nominated for an Oscar yet fell short to Disney’s Frozen. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language film but lost to eventual winner, The Great Beauty, from Italy. The movie however won plenty of other awards including New York Film Critics Circle’s Animation of the Year award, Satelite Awards’ Best Motion Picture, Animated or Mixed Media and Women Film Critics Circle’s Best Family Film.
The Wind Rises beats out The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story, Lupin III vs. Detective Conan the movie, and Space Pirate Captain Harlock en route to winning the top prize in animation.
