This is how the Japanese social media is helping the fight against ISIS: With ISIS-chan!

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has become a global threat, and ever since they captured two Japanese citizens, the Japanese social media has been quick to show them the wrath of the internet. And it seems that the Japanese are intensifying their internet fight with the terrorists with ISIS-chan, an ISIS-based moe anime girl who has recently been flooding ISIS-friendly websites.

Now, ISIS-chan has been making rounds in social media for a while now, especially in 2ch, 4ch, facebook, reddit, and twitter, however, a new report by the BBC has taken a look at the effort by some Japanese internet users who have flooded ISIS-friendly websites with ISIS-chan and thereby disrupting their internet activities. According to the report, they are “ramping up efforts to tackle sympathizers of the Islamic State group on Twitter.”

One of these so-called activists, @isisvipper, has said that they are not hacktivists and said that their efforts “disrupts” ISIS propaganda.

However, there are some rules as pointed out by one of the images above. People posting ISIS-chan to the ISIS-friendly sites should be respectful to peaceful Muslims and not use words that are sacred to them and they should not be joking about hostages. They should not also use any sort of pornography and gore and not condone the use of violence or suggest the use of armed conflict, as ISIS usually does.

According to @isisvipper, they want to present ISIS-chan as a friendly, watermelon-loving girl as opposed to the usual ISIS propaganda. In other words, this is more about propaganda and message control by reducing ISIS into a laughable and comedic anime character instead of the fierce terrorists that they are.

Images such as these are deemed insulting to ISIS as ISIS-chan has been quite different from their usual radical and fundamentalist views.

These “activists” have been using the twitter and facebook hashtags which are normally used by ISIS, as well as the ISIS-affiliated websites exposed by the hacktivist group, Anonymous, which is an insult of sorts to many of these terrorists.

Well, at least ISIS-chan can Nico-Nico-Niiiiiiiiiii! too! Adorable or not, surely she has gotten on the nerves of many terrorists, right?!

The Japanese text reads: “You thought this was going to be a gruesome image? Too bad! It was ISIS-chan.” Fighting terrorism with moe images? Who could have imagined such a thing?! Well, if this trolls ISIS, then maybe it really is working!
