Kantai Collection’s lovable ship girls have taken their inspiration from many of the ships which served during World War II. With the popular browser game’s much awaited anime adaptation now making its premiere in a few days, the series is set to become even more popular than ever. However, amid all the excitement, Kantai Collection’s real-life counterparts have a sad history, and a new MMD chronicles the fate of some of these ships, using their counterparts from Kantai Collection.
The video chronicles Japan’s invasion of Hong Kong and the Philippines, as well as the Battle of Midway, which was commemorated by the browser game’s staff. It also featured the demise of many ships, including the highly popular Shimakaze who met her demise in the waters of the Philippines during the Battle of Ormoc Bay, and Kongou, who was sunk off the coast of Taiwan. The video also featured several key WW2 naval battles like Guadalcanal, The Solomon Islands, and Leyte Gulf, as well as Yamato’s last stand against the might of the US Pacific Fleet.
Kantai Collection, along with Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Girls und Panzer, and Strike Witches, has raised awareness of World War II in Japan, which is considered the darkest part of the country’s long and proud history. Kantai Collection creator Keisuke Tanaka had once said in an interview that he wanted to share historical facts about the warships. The series has gotten quite the good reception, even from World War II veterans themselves, as an original crew member of the Yahagi had once “met” with his former ship’s KanColle counterpart and said that she looks cute.
