The new movie will be known under the title “Star Blazers” and Shoji Nishizaki, son of the late producer of the original anime series will be one of the film’s executive producers. The newspaper has also noted that it would also be very possible that Japanese actors will be part of the cast. Star Blazers is the English-dubbed version of the Space Battleship Yamato series.

Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie is reported to be at the helm of this new Yamato movie and it will be produced by Skydance which is responsible for movies such as World War Z. According to Sports Nippon, McQuarrie, who is currently directing and filming Mission Impossible 5, has said that he is a huge fan of the series and introduced the anime to Skydance.

This won’t be the first live action version of the series however, as a live-action Japanese film starring Takuya Kimura was released back in 2010 and drew a mostly-positive feedback from the the critics.
