Voctro Labs"s MAIKA takes the stage, as the 52nd VOCALOID

Spain’s Voctro Labs is preparing to welcome another addition to their VOCALOID family, and her name is MAIKA.

Although relatively unknown, Voctro Labs were the first company to develop a Spanish speaking VOCALOID. In fact, they developed two of them: Bruno and Clara. Now they’ve developed another new VOCALOID, and she’ll be the 52nd to take on the virtual diva role: MAIKA. Her design was selected from among those who entered Voctro’s design contest and created by Noriko Hayashi.

Interestingly enough her voice source isn’t an actual person. Instead it’s another virtual idol named Ona, who debuted at the Mercè Festival in Barcelona. Ona can sing in Catalan, a dialect special to the Barcelona area, and standard Spanish, which will hopefully carry over to MAIKA’s voicebanks as well.

To show off what MAIKA sounds inside a pop-song and in a setting without as much voice mixing, two demos are up on YouTube. The first, Cruz de navajas (Cross of Knives), is MAIKA in the native Vocaloid 3 Engine.

The second En tu mirar (In Your Eyes) shows off MAIKA’s voice inside a pop-song and it sounds like they did a good job of smoothing out any robotic sounds.

For those enamored by her lovely singing, checkout her Facebook page for more, though it is also in Spanish.
