Right now, Japan is in a state of celebration as they have just won the right to host the world’s most prestigious sporting event, the Olympics in 2020.
But who could have thought that of all things, a classic manga well-loved by people all over the world would actually predict its outcome? That’s right, a manga predicted it’s gonna happen, and that manga is none other that Katsuhiro Otomo‘s masterpiece, Akira.
One of the manga’s set in the year 2019 with Tokyo hosting the 2020 Olympic Games and the titular Akira was placed in a cryogenic state right under the future site of the Olympic stadium. This shocking coincidence however has caused alarm for some people who have noticed this as Akira is set in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo which was built after a nuclear blast destroyed Tokyo and started World War III.
Coincidence or not, this concern did not dampen the mood in Tokyo as people are still celebrating their victory over other host candidates Madrid, Spain and Istanbul, Turkey.
Akira is a manga written by Katsuhiro Otomo and ran from 1982-1990. The manga had an animated film adaptation which was also directed by the manga author. The series has been published in English by renowned comic book company Dark Horse Comics and has sold millions of copies worldwide.
