Japan is experiencing a sudden upsurge in the amount of female rock musicians, and TBS is pinning it on KyoAni‘s K-On! series.
You could say it’s never-ending girls’ rock with the rising number of girls interested in taking up rock instruments and forming a band. Although Princess Princess started the original idea of a girls’ rock band in 1989, K-On! more recently has helped to inspire girls to join light music clubs across the nation.
According to one retail sales assistant who works at a music store, there’s been an increase in the number of high-school girls coming in to purchase instruments for a light music club – much like the scene in the show where Yui buys a Gibson LesPaul guitar.
That means that across Japan there are hundreds of real-life K-On episodes happening. The question is, which one will make it to the big leagues after their high school years are over?
