PlayStation 4 to launch in Japan February 22, 2014... how will this affect Asia?

Traditionally, PlayStation consoles have always launched first in Japan. Whether it be the PlayStation 1, 2, or 3, or their portable cousins the PSP and PS Vita, they’ve always been released in Japan first.

That will all change, however, with the PlayStation 4. Not this time, Japan.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia has announced today at their pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference that the PS4 will launch in Japan on February 22, 2014.

This is as opposed to the 2013 holiday launch timing in the US and Europe. Specifically, November 15 in the US, and November 29 to Europe.

Sony explained that the decision to launch the PS4 in Japan in 2014 was one that was made after consulting with numerous game developers and publishers in Japan. Launching in 2014 would allow SCEJA and their partners to ensure that the PS4 has a good number of quality titles that caters to the Japanese market at launch.

To make up for the 2014 launch date, SCEJA iss planning to roll out a PlayStation 4 Limited Pack that will come with the action game Knack, as well as two years of hardware warranty (standard one year, plus an extended additional year) at launch in Japan.

So that’s when gamers in Japan can expect to get their hands on the PS4.

What about gamers in Asia?

Since a good number of us in Asia buy and play mostly English titles, there is a chance that we might actually get the PS4 in our region earlier than Japan.

Then again, the Asian market is under the jurisdiction of SCEJA (Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia), which is the same branch of Sony Computer Entertainment that handles the Japanese market.

We’ll likely find out confirmed launch details for the PS4 in Asia on September 18, when SCEJA will hold a press conference specifically to make announcements for the Asian market.

SGCafe will be at the SCEJA press conference on September 18 to cover it live from location. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out.
