Sometimes, people are more interested in seeing support characters or side characters shine more than the main characters, and sometimes, they even get more love from fans than the main characters themselves!
Japanese anime character database, Charapedia, has asked its fans which supporting character in anime is the one they want to see depicted as a main character the most. The online poll asked 10,000 fans, 45.9% being male and 54.1% being female, about their opinion, and here are the results:

It seems like fans really want to see a Shinsengumi spin-off animated as both Hijikata and Okita take 1st and 5th places respectively. If there were a Shinsengumi spin-off from Gintama, it would be one of these two who would be the main character.
Fans also want to see several sports anime characters from the main characters’ opposing teams featured as a main character of their own series as Kuroko’s Basketball’s Takao and Yowamushi Pedal’s Arakita place high within the Top 3, with Tooru Oikawa placing 4th.
Some of the characters mentioned in the list also have spin-off series of their own, such as Levi from Attack on Titan, and Accelerator from the A Certain series.
