The Japan Academy Prize Association is Japan’s answer to Hollywood’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which hand out the Oscar Awards. In Japan, winning their awards is almost comparable to winning an Oscar, so these awards are prestigious indeed.

Previous winners of the Animation of the year include big names like Spirited Away, Summer Wars, and the Girl who Leaped Through Time. The awarding ceremony, as well as the announcement of winners will be on February 27, 2014.
