May is the 5th month of the year, and when you you think about it, if May 9 in Japanese, it sounds like “Go”, which is 5, and “Ku”, which is 9. So when you put them together, you get Goku.
According to the official website of the Japan Anniversary Association, May 9, which was yesterday, was Dragon Ball Day, and no, we are not kidding, you can check it out on their official website through this link. They also named May 25 as “Terminator Day” among others.
Speaking of May 9, legendary voice actress, Masako Nozawa, who is best known for voicing Goku, recently appeared in a special screening of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F. She spoke about when she first started working as a voice actress and dubbing young male characters from western films. However, her opinion changed when she auditioned to voice Goku and creator Akira Toriyama deciding right away that she is the one for the job after hearing her audition. After also being chosen to voice Goku’s sons, Gohan and Goten, she now says “I’m truly glad that I’m a voice actress.”
And since the next day is mother’s day, a staff member cosplaying as Goku appeared and handed her flowers, and dubbing her as the “Mother of Dragon Ball.”
The official website for Shueisha, which serialized the Dragon Ball manga in their Weekly Shounen Jump! magazine, updated their website to celebrate Dragon Ball Day
