Thanks to a student finding his USB thumb drive filled with “sexually explicit images drawn in a Japanese style called anime” along with a few images of “real girls between five and 13 years old”, a former computer lab technician for the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) named Roy Franklyn Newcombe, 70, has been sentenced to 90 days imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to Child Pornography.
According to court findings, most of the 20 image contents of the USB drive were anime (or to be specific, hentai), however, only a few contained real girls. This however, was enough to have Newcombe fired from his job and then later arrested.
According to Newcombe’s lawyer, he “stumbled upon the illegal images while searching the Internet for adult pornography.” Newcombe apologized to everyone, including his wife, his family, and the judge.
He is also receiving mental health counselling, two years of probation, and being banned from using the internet. He is also prohibited from approaching children under 16 years of age, which makes his own personal life harder as he and his wife are the foster parents for a minor. Their foster child would have to live away from him because of this. Ouch!
In Japan, it is still a highly debated topic on whether or not sexually explicit illustrations of children or minors can be considered child pornography. The topic is also debated in many parts of the world as many do not consider 2D illustrations or even 3D computer graphic images to be children and are more of a work of art. Others however argue that this can still lead to child porn or influence individuals to be interested in the matter.
