Knights of Sidonia, Seven Deadly Sins, and more win big at the Kodansha Manga Awards

The winners for the 39th Kodansha Manga Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the Japanese manga industry, have finally been announced, with one winner in the general manga category, one winner in the Shoujo manga (for girls) category, and two winners for the Shounen manga (for boys) category.

The winner for the General Category is none other than Tsutomu Nihei’s bestselling science fiction mecha manga, Knights of Sidonia, which currently has the second season of its anime adaptation, Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet 9, airing in Japan.

The Shounen Manga category meanwhile was won by two very popular Kodansha mangas, The Seven Deadly Sins (by Nakaba Suzuki), and Yowamushi Pedal (by Wataru Watanabe). Both are actually proving to be quite the contenders as both these mangas have shown some pretty interesting and exciting story lines. But while Seven Deadly Sins is popular to its target demographic, which are young men, Yowamushi Pedal’s bishounen cyclists have attracted a more female fan-following, even though it was originally targeted for guys, much like Kuroko’s Basketball.

The award for this year’s best shoujo manga according to Kodansha is none other than Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu by Tsunami Umino. Launched back in 2013, this manga has already released five volumes and is currently gaining popularity among young women.
