High Score Girl, Rensuke Oshikiri’s hit manga series about the video games subculture, will be getting an anime adaptation, a new magazine scan leaked on the Web has revealed.
High Score Girl is set in 1991 and follows the story of an unpopular grade school boy named Haruo Yaguchi. Haruo is neither good-looking nor is he smart (or even nice and friendly), and the only thing he is good at is video games.
One day, he runs into popular-girl-at-school Akira Oono in an arcade and gets thoroughly trashed by her in Street Fighter II, losing to her 30 times in a row. He then loses to her in every other game they play together. Akira then follows Haruo around arcades where she beats him every single time. An odd friendship between the two soon ensues.
The manga ranked #2 in the 2013 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! Top 20 Manga for Male Readers survey and was nominated for many other awards. The manga is serialized in Square Enix’s Big Gangan manga magazine.
