It’s no secret that the small coastal town of Oarai in Ibaraki prefecture is now a “Holy Land” for anime pilgrims wanting. The town is known for being the setting for the popular tank anime, Girls und Panzer and its tourism has been booming lately thanks in large part to the anime.
The anime pilgrims visiting the town have not only given it much needed tourism revenue but also security. According to the image tweeted by BBSLEVEL, anime pilgrims have been walking around town in the early mourning hours of 6 am. This has served as a deterrence for would-be evil doers around the small Japanese town.
Oarai is a small town and with hundreds of pilgrims visiting it everyday, even in the wee hours of the morning, would-be-criminals are running the risk of being discovered if they ever do something that might be breaking the law.
Oarai is currently experiencing a boom in tourism. Just last month, November 2013, the town was visited by more than 100,000 people for their annual Angler Fish Festival. Majority of the those festival goers are Girls und Panzer fans. Big companies like Mitsubishi announced their Girls und Panzer collaborations during the festival as well.
Fans have also flocked the town for birthdays of Hana Isuzu and main character Miho Nishizumi. With this much attention going into the town, it won’t be surprising if most criminal elements are deterred from doing their usual activities.
