Veteran voice actor Toru Furuya may be used to handling powerful mechas from the original RX-78-2 Gundam to the Nu Gundam as legendary ace pilot, Amuro Ray. However, during the Microsoft Windows Spring Festival 2014, he finally manages to get inside a real-life robot and pilot it.
The Microsoft event, which was held at the Bellesalle Akihabara featured Yodobashi Heavy Industry’s real-life mecha, the Kuratas which came in with customized Windows and Microsoft decals. It had an air of intimidation in it, especially with a canon attached in its right arm.
But the main event of the evening was definitely the appearance of the legendary voice actor who was one of the reasons the Gundam franchise is such a huge success. A brief program introduced Furuya to the waiting crowd who eagerly anticipated his arrival. People really did want to see Amuro Ray pilot a robot.
Finally, the man known not only for voicing Guindam’s Amuro, but also Saint Seiya’s Pegasus Seiya, Gundam 00′s Ribbons Almark, Gintama’s Elizabeth, Sailor Moon’s Tuxedo Mask, and Dragon Ball Z’s Yamcha, finally boards Japan’s first giant mecha built for fighting.
Now, the Kuratas may not have the same monstrous specs as the RX-78-2, the Zeta Gundam or the Nu and the Hi-Nu, but with Furuya piloting, it is definitely a treat for mecha fans everywhere. Here is a video from the event:
