"Assassination Classroom" & 4 others beat "Attack on Titan" in the 2014 Kono Manga ga Sugoi rankings

Attack on Titan has become quite the manga juggernaut as of late, but who would ever think that this year’s most successful series would only fall to sixth place in one of the most coveted shounen manga rankings in Japan, the 2014 edition of the annual Kono Manga ga Sugoi magazine.

Attack on Titan has had quite the year this 2013 as the anime series cranked up the manga’s popularity big time. It just reached its historic 200 millionth manga copy sold, an achievement which only a few mangas have ever reached. That achievement however was not enough to win it all in Kono Manga Ga Sugoi’s rankings as the manga fell five places short of the coveted #1 spot for shounen manga which went to Shounen Jump! favorite Assassination Classroom.

Yuusei Matsui’s Shounen Jump! comedy manga takes the #1 spot for the Shounen division. It has already become one of the most highly rated mangas in such a short time since its debut last July 2012 and has become one of the highest selling mangas which has yet to have an anime series. An event-exclusive anime based on the manga was previously showen during the Jump Super Anime Tour from October 6 to November 24, 2013.

Taking the #2 spot is Sano Nami’s high school manga Sakamoto desu ga? The manga is about 1st year high schooler Sakamoto who gains popularity because of his coolness. Girls love him while guys hate him and they will do anything they can to upstage Sakamoto who often beats them in all sorts of hi jinx.

The #3 spot belongs to Ahito (亜人) by Emon Sakurai (桜井画門). This shounen manga is about a “norma;” high school student named Kei Nagai who gets run over by a truck and dies but gets resurrected because he is actually an “Ahito”, he immediately resurrects.

Naoko Matsuda’s Juuhan Shuutai! (重版出来!) takes #4 while the #5 spot goes to Weekly Shounen Magazine manga The Seven Deadly Sins by Nakaba Suzuki.

Here are the other members of the top 10:

7- Hikidashi ni Terrarium by Ryoko Kui

8- Amaama to Inazuma by Gido Amagakure

9- On’noji by Shi Kawayuki (施川ユウキ)

10- Houseki no Kuni by Haruko Ichikawa

These 10 manga have proven to be very popular among the younger male (shounen) readers but some may not be popular yet outside of Japan. But who knows? Maybe in the future, one of them will get an anime adaptation and enjoy the same level of success success that Attack on Titan has achieved?

Other previous Kono Manga ga Sugoi #1 winners include Black Jack (2012), Terra Formars (2013) and Attack on Titan (2011). The magazine ranks the top mangas for male readers, female readers, male-oriented manga magazines and the female-oriented manga magazines. There is also a magazine for light Novels known as Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! whose results can be viewed through this link: http://sgcafe.com/2013/11/kono-light-novel-ga-sugoi-2014-magazine-rankings-finally-revealed/
