35 years since Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s revolutionary mecha anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam, first changed the anime landscape back in April 1979, Gundam Front Tokyo is holding a special limited time event celebrating the legendary series’ milestone.
The special exhibition started last April 19 and it celebrates the 35th Anniversary of the Gundam franchise. The exhibition includes a look at Gundam’s predecessors which paved the way for the series like Astro Boy and Mazinger Z, as well as information on the events which has led to the birth of the original 1979 classic.
The exhibition also featured drafts, sketches and artworks from 1979 which includes the original character designs for Amuro, Char, and Sayla. It also included the original mecha designs for the RX-78-2 Gundam, The Guntank and the Guncanon which are very different from their final designs.
Speaking of the Gundam, the Guncanon and the Guntank, 1/10 scale versions of the three legendary Mobile Suits are currently on display as part of the 35th anniversary event.
Gundam is also known for its revolutionary plastic models known as GunPla and the exhibition features some the very first GunPla which started it all.
The exhibition features a chronology of all the Gundam anime as well as GunPla which were from that specific Gundam series, OVA or movie. It includes series from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam and its sequels, Gundam Zeta and Gundam ZZ to War in the Pocket, 08th MS Team, Char’s Counter-Attack, Gundam F-91, Stardust Memory, MS IGLOO, Gundam UC and Gundam Victory. It also shows series which are not from the UC timeline like G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam X, Endless Waltz, Turn A Gundam, Gundam SEED, Gundam SEED Destiny, Gundam SEED Stargazer, Gundam AGE, Gundam Build Fighters and even SD Gundam Force.
Finally, the event also includes a look at Gundam UC from mecha and character designs to sketches, artworks and an exhibit featuring the series DVD and Blu-ray releases.
