Anime has certainly introduced many great mothers who are very loving and caring towards their children, however, there will always be moms who are the exact opposite. As we celebrate Mothers’ Day today, we now take a look at some moms who are a great example of how a mother should NOT be.
Like our list of most endearing anime moms, this list is also not ranked and we have picked five moms who future and current mothers should never ever emulate. Here are our picks for the 5 worst moms in anime:
Ragyou Kiryuin (Kill la Kill)
Come on, is there any question why Ragyou is in our list? She dumped her youngest daughter (who was still a baby) into a deep pit because she could not synchronize with life fibers properly, she abuses her other daughter, Satsuki constantly, she will kill anyone without feeling any remorse and she would kill her own daughters just for the life fibers to take over the Earth. She is also the poster child for bad mothers everywhere. Need we say more? Now, cue the music!
Hayate’s mom (Hayate the Combat Butler!)
Just a question, what kind of mom forces her son into child labor while she gambles? What kind of mom takes her son’s hard earned money and just uses it to do useless stuff? What kind of mom sells her son to some “very generous people” for 150 million yen? Well, Hayate Ayasaki’s mother did all those things and she does not even feel a bit of remorse towards her actions, she even laughs about it.
Kumiko Kotoura (Kotoura-san)
She starts out as a kind and loving mother who wishes to have a happy family, until her daughter Haruka started manifesting her psychic powers. Though Kumiko may be considered the least awful mom in our list, the picture above says it all. She has practically disowned her daughter, and told her that she wished she has never given birth to her. Haruka, who is already emotionally scarred from being left by her father and being bullied by her classmates because of her mind reading abilities, gets even worse mentally. With deep emotional scars, Haruka would never even be able to have a normal life until she meets a certain boy…
In reality, Kumiko still cares for her daughter, however, her actions have hurt her daughter and are clearly not the actions of a good mother.
Marianne Vi Britannia (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)
On the outside, Lady Marianne is a loving mother to her children, Nunnally and Lelouch, but on the inside, she only loves them superficially and will not hesitate to kill any of them if they get in her way. She appears as a sweet, kind and gentle mother at first but as the story progresses, her true nature is eventually revealed. Her kids are merely pawns in her plan and her gentle facade makes her an even worse kind of mother than some in our list.
Medusa Gorgon (Soul Eater)
Poor Crona just had to be born from a mother such as Medusa, who like Marianne Vi Britannia, just treats her kid as a mere pawn. She sees Crona as nothing more than a research material and would not hesitate to dispose of him/her if she outlives his/her usefulness. She forces Crona to take in Black Blood which alters his/her body drastically and Medusa’s treatment of her child leaves Crona mentally unstable. If she ain’t a bad mom, then I don’t know what is.
So there you have it ladies and gents, our picks for the five worst moms in anime. And to all the moms out there, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!, may you NOT follow the examples set by Ragyou, Hayate’s mom, Kumiko, Marianne and Medusa.
