[Video] Hayao Miyazaki makes history as he personally accepts his Honorary Oscar Award

In a rare appearance in the United States, legendary anime director and Studio Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, appeared before some of the biggest and brightest stars of Hollywood to personally accept his Honorary Oscar Award given to him by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

This historic milestone for the anime legend will be his second Oscar, the first being back in 2003 when he won the Best Animated Feature Film for Spirited Away. However, Miyazaki did not personally accept his first award. This time, however, he is in Hollywood and stood before its most famous stars.

The man who introduced Miyazaki was fellow animation legend John Lasseter, the Pixar head responsible for Toy Story and recently announced his involvement in Toy Story 4. Lasseter stated that he used Miyazaki’s debut movie, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, to woo his wife. He praised Miyazaki by saying

had adventure, heart, action and humor, done with such style and sophistication and a wonderful eye for the details of human behavior. It was proof positive, as Walt Disney had showed so many years earlier, that animation was for everyone…Every time I watch a Miyazaki film, I learn something about the craft of film making.

From one legend to another, that was indeed a lot of respect shown for the Japanese anime director. Some stars even wanted to take pictures with Miyazaki, like British film star Andy Serkis, best known for his work as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies.
