The SGCafe New Year Special: The 6 most disappointing anime of 2014

2014 had its fair share of unforgettable anime like Aldnoah.Zero and Kill la Kill, as well as some which have far exceeded expectations such as One Week Friends and Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. However, unlike our first two New Year specials for 2015, where we took a look at the Top 10 anime of 2014 and the most anticipated new anime of 2015, we are now taking a look at some of the anime from last year which have disappointed. Here are our picks for the 6 most disappointing anime of 2014:

Glasslip

After making fans cry at their visually stunning anime known as Nagi no Asukara, P.A. Works followed it up with the equally-well animated Glasslip, however, it seems that the expectations were too high for the anime as it felt rushed and its characters a bit underdeveloped. Unlike Nagi no Asu, Glasslip came off as a little bit confusing to say the least, and for that, it makes it to our list of 2014 disappointments.

Magical Warfare (Mahou Sensou)

Magical Warfare actually started off pretty good, and it set up a pretty exciting story, however, in the following episodes, the anime had a breakdown of sorts as the plot slowly went from exciting to stale and boring. When the anime ended, people were even scratching their heads and asked, what the heck happened? The build-up in the first few episodes was really good, however, it all went downhill really really fast which is why it deserves its place in our list.

Blade & Soul

Let’s face it, Blade & Soul was really just one big commercial for the Blade & Soul MMORPG. Like Magical Warfare, the anime started out as a very decent one yet became boring and too fan-servicey a little bit too early. While the characters were a little bit more interesting and the action was great, the story was difficult to comprehend and at times confusing.

Maken-Ki! Two

Ahhh, Maken-Ki! Two, that jiggly and fan-service-filled anime which has really become one of the biggest disappointments of the year. Unlike the original season, which had more story and better character development, the second season focused more on fan service and animating as much oppai as possible. The anime pretty much ignored the plot (No, NOT that plot!) and sacrificed it for more unneeded fan service scenes. The lower animation quality as compared to the first season also does not help one bit.

Girlfriend (Beta)

With an all-star cast of a-list voice actresses and newcomers, Girlfriend (Beta) promised a lot of potential, however, even with all that awesome voice acting, the anime was disappointing because it was simply, Boring. Yes, the characters were interesting and the voice acting, given its all-star cast, was just simply marvelous, and the animation was also good, however, the anime did not have the one thing that is very important which is needed in every anime, and that is a good story, which it most certainly lacks… a lot.

Mekaku City Actors

Based on the popular Vocaloid song series by Jin known as Kagerou Days, the anime came into 2015 with all the hype in the world, however, come its first episode, the hype train was stopped. Yes, the anime was successful, very successful in fact, however, the anime felt rushed and the story is very confusing. The animation was done by Shaft and the anime was directed by Monogatari’s Akiyuki Shinbo, which added to all its hype, however, it seems that all that hype was its downfall in the end as people just expected too much from the anime. The anime however managed to save a bit of its glory as the next few episodes have been done quite well, however, by the time the anime’s climax, it had reverted to its original and confusing self.

Aside from the six anime we have found really disappointing, we would like to add two “special mentions”. These two anime are not really disappointing, however, given all the hype they have coming into their respective seasons, these two have disappointed a bit. They are Tokyo Ghoul and Terra Formars. Both anime had all the hype, however, they unfortunately did not fully live up to it and felt rushed and did not develop the characters as much.
