This week Sega announced via the pages of Weekly Famitsu magazine Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd for the PS3 and PS Vita consoles.
Tentatively scheduled for a Spring 2014 release, the new game’s development is currently 39% complete (well, around that level, at least; 39 can be read as “Miku” in Japanese so Sega probably thought it cute to leave it as that), and this sequel’s theme was said to be “an evolution of the series in two simultaneous directions: the Project Diva games thus far, as well as the Project Diva games moving forward.”

No concrete details on the new game’s play mechanics or modes were given, but judging from the three songs that were confirmed to be in the game this week, it’s quite clear what Sega’s two-pronged approach is likely referring to:
Akatsuki Arrival (new song)
Colourful Melody (previously from Project Diva 2nd)
Romeo and Juliet (also from Project Diva 2nd)
All of the songs in Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f/F were entirely new songs never-before featured in the series thus far, which was good in that this meant fans got to play a lot more new songs.
But it sure would have been nice to be able to play some of the older tracks, redone with a new PV and notechart in the latest console version of Project Diva, wouldn’t it?
That’s what Sega thought fans wanted, and back in December of last year, the Sega feat. Hatsune Miku development team ran a “sousenkyo” or “featured songs election” poll to find out which past Project Diva songs fans would most like to see redone in F.
The voting ended in mid January, and although Sega never actually posted the final results, they did give us a good idea of which songs were popular amongst Hatsune Miku fans who voted, via a mid-term poll result update: Romeo & Cinderella reigned in first place, and Colorful x Melody was somewhere in the middle.
Sega had said back when they started the poll that they’d only use the poll results as a reference to see which songs they should put into Project Diva F in some form, meaning when they eventually get to remaking classic Project Diva tracks for the new title, rather than go for the top X number of tunes, they’d pick a well-rounded selection from amongst the top 30.
And that’s likely why Romeo and Cinderella as wellas Colorful X Melody was announced with the game. If you’re a fan of a song that made it into the top 30, there’s a chance that you might be able to see it in Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd.
