The developers of the Disgaea RPG series have a story for you, about a small girl and a firefly in a dark, empty world.
Hotaru no Nikki (Firefly’s Diary) is a puzzle action game for the PS Vita, part of Nippon Ichi Software’s new brand and an experiment in genres other than their typical RPGs. The first trailer of the game introduces the story with a mysterious, fairy tale vibe (and narration by the voice actress Maaya Sakamoto).
The story begins on December 31, in the year 9999 (that’s far!). The heroine Mion awakens in the utter depths of an abandoned ruins among a rain of rust. With no memory of how she came to be there, she quivers in fear until the arrival of a firefly. The glow is somehow comforting and nostalgic, so she follows the firefly, and the firefly decides to lead the girl outside.
The outside world is ruthless, and Mion immediately falls in the shadow of debris, but with the firefly, the darkness is vanquished. And so the firefly leads Mion up, and up. Because she has a reason for guiding the child.
Hotaru no Nikki is scheduled to be released for the PS Vita on June 19. To learn more about the game, you can visit the official website, where you can also play a flash mini-game demonstrating how the game works.
