Mecha has been one of the most identifiable anime genres ever since Astro Boy was first animated back in the 1960′s and as the latest rankings from Japanese anime character database, Charapedia, have been announced, they have revealed which specific mechas in anime do fans think is the most powerful.
These results are based on people’s opinions and how many have voted or commented on them and do not necessarily reflect how powerful these mechas really are. With 10,000 votes, 83.3% of which are male while 13.7% of which are female, here are Charapedia’s ten most powerful robots in anime:
10) Strike Freedom Gundam (Gundam SEED Destiny)
9) Arale Norimaki (Dr. Slump)
8) Gaogaigar (GaoGaiGar: King of the Braves)
7) RX-78-2 Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam)
6) Eva Unit 01 (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
5) Gunbuster (Gunbuster)
4) Turn A Gundam (Turn A Gundam)
3) Ideon (Space Runaway Ideon)
2) Doraemon (Doraemon)
1) Gurren Lagann (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
Gurren Lagann, which can destroy galaxies as if they are nothing, takes the #1 spot and it ain’t very surprising. The super robot has been known to evolve to a more powerful form every time it is faced with a bigger threat and fans have taken that much power into consideration.
#2 ranked Doraemon meanwhile may raise a few eyebrows when it comes to the most powerful robots list but don’t let his looks fool you, Doraemon can always cook up something interesting in that pocket of his.
Meanwhile, three Gundams have made it to the list and they are #10 ranked Strike Freedom, #6 ranked RX-78-2 and #4 ranked Turn A which is known for destroying Earth’s entire civilization with its powerful Moonlight Butterfly. Other powerful Gundams did not make it to the list including the V2 Gundam, the Gundam 00 QAN[T] and Unicorn Gundam.
Speaking of Gundam, Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino has three entries in the list, including the civilization-destroying Turn A, his claim-to-fame, the RX-78-2, and Ideon from his critically acclaimed Space Runaway Ideon which ranked #3.
