Since 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam has thrilled audiences and has been loved by generations as it has generated spin-offs, a highly successful PlaMo line and various other merchandise. With the Gundam franchise celebrating its 35th anniversary, Japanese website Akiba Souken has asked its readers which Gundam series do they think is the best?

With a total of 3,025 votes which were tallied from the period of June 4 – 18, 2014, here are the results:

Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino’s unforgettable movie, Char’s Counterattack is voted the best Gundam series in the franchise’s 35-year history in Akiba Souken’s online poll, and it is also considered one of the greatest Gundam stories by fans. The anime’s ending was so unforgettable that it has been mentioned in other Gundam series, mangas, and video games and it has left an indelible mark in the hearts of many fans.

The original series meanwhile takes the #2 spot as many fans consider the series which started it all to be the very best. Gundam UC, whose 7th episode is still fresh in the minds of many fans narrowly beats out Zeta Gundam which is considered by critics as Yoshiyuki Tomino’s best work. Fan-favorite Gundam SEED meanwhile rounds out the top 5.
