Hayao Miyazaki"s never-seen-before World Masterpiece Theater sketches to be put on display

For the 40th anniversary of the World Masterpiece Theater, Nippon Animation will be giving fans a very special treat as they will feature never-seen-before sketches done by none other than the Oscar-winning anime director and Studeio Ghibli Co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki

30 of the legendary anime director’s World Masterpiece Theater sketches, including the one seen above from Anne of Green Gables, will be among the 130 artworks going on display in Ikebukuro’s Tobu Department Store 8th floor event space area for the 40th anniversary exhibition. Also included are the legend’s sketches of Rascal the Racoon and Nero from the Dog of Flanders

The exhibition will feature background illustrations and character sketches, which have never been on public display before from series which also include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Swiss Family Robinson, and Daddy Long-Legs. Also featured are artworks and background art from several legendary figures in Japan’s animation industry, including Takamura Mukuo and Seiji Endou.

Before founding Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata, Hayao Miyazaki (and Takahata) both worked for World Masterpiece Theater and have worked on several titles including Rascal the RaccoonAnne of Green Gables, and The Dog of Flanders


Known as the The Sekai Meisaku Gekijouten, the exhibition will be held from July 30 until August 18, 2015. It is part of a 2-year tour which includes stops in Hiroshima and Hokkaido.
