Light novels have now become a huge part of the anime subculture in Japan and many series have produced extremely successful anime adaptations like ‘Sword Art Online‘, the ‘Monogatari‘ series, ‘Haganai‘, ‘OreImo‘ and the ‘A Certain‘ series.
Each year, a special annual magazine called “Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi” or “This Light Novel is Amazing!” comes out and ranks these light novels according to best series, best male and female characters and more. A preview of the magazine’s cover and series winner was featured in one of our previous articles.
Here are the magazine’s results for the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi 2014 magazine:
Best Female light novel characters
10- Yozora Mikazuki (Haganai)
9- Miyuki Shiba (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei)
8- Shion (Sword Art Online)
7- Ayase Aragaki (OreImo)
6- Kirino Kosaka (OreImo)
5- Index (A Certain series)
4- Yui Yuigahama (Oregairu)
3- Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online)
2- Yukino Yukinoshita (Oregairu)
1- Mikoto Misaka (A Certain Series)
This would be Biribiri… I mean Mikoto’s fourth consecutive victory in the Best Female Character as she has previously took the coveted #1 spot in 201o, 2011 and 2012. Looks like the Railgun S anime gave the middle school shocker a huge boost.
Best Male light novel characters
10- Koremitsu Akagi (Hikaru ga Chikyuu ni Itakoro)
9- Ken Sugisaki (The Student Council’s Discretion)
8- Tatsuya Shiba (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei)
7- Izayoi Sakamaki (Problem Children are Coming from Another World, aren’t they?)
6- Kyosuke Kosaka (OreImo)
5- Maou Sadao (Hataraku Maou-sama!)
4- Accelerator (A Certain series)
3- Kirito (Sword Art Online)
2- Touma Kamijo (A Certain series)
1- Hachiman Hikigaya (Oregairu)
Hachiman may have been called “awesome” by fans since he made his anime debut but he has been hitting a lot of chords correctly in the light novel adaptations as well. His “I hate nice girls” monologue has given many anime fans plenty to think about and his “Batman-like” approach to dealing with his school mates has given him praise as the series’ “Dark Knight”
Best Light Novel
10- No Game, No Life
9- OreImo
8- Rokka no Yuusha
7- Tokyo Ravens
6- Hataraku Maou Sama!
5- Sword Art Online
4- Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darou ka
3- A Certain Magical Index New Testament
2- Tenkyou no Alderamin – Nejimaki Seirei Senki
1- Oregairu
2013 may be the year of Attack on Titan for manga but when it comes to light novels, it is the year of Oregairu. The manga has experienced huge success this year and with Hachiman taking #1 in the character rankings and Yukino and Yui taking #2 and #4 respectively in the female rankings, the future for the LN series looks very bright.
The ‘A Certain’ series has also been having a great year and with Mikoto taking the #1 spot again, this series has proven to be a serious annual contender.
Dethroned after winning it all two years in a row is Sword Art Online. The series which experienced great success last year thanks to its hit anime adaptation won the #1 spot for the 2013 and 2012 editions of the magazine.
The magazine is now available online via Amazon.com for 550 yen and also includes character rankings for both male and female light novel characters.
