After months of voting in Japan, the fog has lifted, the results are finally in and the magical girl known as Madoka Kaname has been announced as the winner of Japan’s Saimoe tournament, the Anime Saimoe 2013.
Looks like the recent success of the third movie boosted Madoka’s popularity as she defeated her close friend and ally, Sayaka Miki in the tournament’s final round with the score of 277 to 191 votes.
Madoka also triumphed over another Madoka Magica heroine, Kyouko Sakura in the semi-finals while she defeated OreImo‘s Kuroneko who won a different Saimoe tournament this year known as the International Saimoe League 2013 (ISML) in the quarter finals. Before her win over Kuroneko, she defeated another OreImo favorite in the form of Ayase Aragaki in the eighth final round.
The Anime Saimoe tournament started last July. It is a voting tournament where female anime characters from different series are pitted against one another by the fans who voted for their favorites. The characters have to be female so absolutely no trap characters here which means no Hideyoshis.
The tournament is seen as a serious rivalry between fans of certain characters and is taken very seriously by many individuals.
Some of the previous winners include Touki Onjouji from Saki (2012), Mami Tomoe from Madoka Magica (2011), Azusa Nakano from K-On!!(2010), Taiga Aisaka from Toradora (2009) and Kagami Hiiragi from Lucky Star (2008).
