Hit anime and manga series One Piece has been jacking several newspapers all over Japan lately and it has gotten a lot of attention recently.
This special promotion which features unique One Piece newspaper print ads have caused quite a stir since each ad is unique to the prefecture the “jacked” newspaper is found. Each ad also features one One Piece character like Zoro in Fukushima prefecture and Nami in Ehime prefecture. Each of the One Piece main characters were featured in the Japanese ads except for Luffy.
It seems like the reason why Monkey D. Luffy was nowhere to be found in the 47 prefectures was that he was on a special international mission, one which would take him abroad to America and Taiwan to jack two of the most prestigious, influential and highly recognized newspapers in the world, the New York Times and the China Times.
In the November 21, 2013 issue of the New York Times, Luffy gets a full-page spread with the words “Hey World, this is the manga” written on the background.
The November 22, 2013 edition of the China Times in Taiwan also features the same image but with a different background color.
Both newspaper print ads are drawn by One Piece manga author Eiichiro Oda himself. Both print ads, along with the 47 Japanese newspaper ads are the result of One Piece celebrating its 300 millionth manga copies sold milestone which it has achieved after more than a decade of serialization.
