Japanese animation possesses several unique traits which make them quite alluring to many. However, there are also some unique traits which tend to make some of the uninitiated feel a bit uncomfortable. Several Chinese citizens in the city of Hangzhou were asked which anime conventions make foreigners feel uncomfortable. Here is what they had to say.
1) Main characters often don’t have a father or a mother
They gave examples like Son Goku from Dragon Ball and Naruto who were introduced as orphans. In fact, the orphan trope is quite common in anime with plenty of main and side characters turning out to having lost their father and their mother at a very young age.
2) Main characters often eat too much
This one is common among Shounen anime but can also be seen in some Seinen and Shoujo anime as well. The example given was Luffy who is known for his undying love of meat. These “gluttonous” characters may make people uncomfortable with the how they eat and the volume of their food intake.
3) Heroes are often surrounded by girls
Anime has a very special genre known as “Harem” where main characters often have at least three girls falling for them and these “Harem Kings” would often be caught in many fan service situations which would make many feminists cringe.
4) Heroes are too nice
More often than not, “Harem Kings” are nice guys, so nice that even if they are surrounded by beautiful girls, they will stay as celibate as possible and this just makes many foreigners feel frustrated as this often leads to indecisive heroes. Case-in-point: Rito Yuuki from To Love-Ru!
5) Girls with large chests always tend to fall over
There is this beautiful anime girl serving you some hot tea, and when she approaches you with, she immediately falls over and spills some hot tea into you. Let’s just say Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya knows this one all too well. Girls with large breasts are often presented as the “Dojikko” character or the clumsy girl and this may often be attributed to being “top heavy”… according to some flat-chested characters.
6) Train Molesters
More often than not, a female character would enter a very packed and crowded train only to find somebody groping her and it is unsurprising that this would indeed make several people very uncomfortable.
7) Tsunderes
While many find them cute, others seem to be quite annoyed by them. That may be the reason why they are part of this list.
8) The world is saved by a teenager
The world is in danger and the military/ JSDF/ Earth Federation are not around to prevent disaster but ultimately fail, however, the disaster is averted thanks to one hero. Who is this hero that has done what trained soldiers have not? A teenager of course! This is quite common in shounen, seinen, mecha and magical girl anime and has been a part of the charm many Japanese anime have. However, this has made some people quite uncomfortable due to the fact that a teenager was forced to risk his life and carry a heavy burden just to save the world.
9) The Hot Spring scene
Along with the beach, the hot springs tend to give the series a good reason to provide more fan service scenes where the girls are featured naked or wrapped in towels.
10) The running scene in the anime’s OP
A lot of the openings in anime feature the main character running one way or another and it seems that many people found that weird.
So, do you also find these anime tropes or conventions uncomfortable?
