Details on gameplay changes and the new Mobile Suits that are being added to Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost have emerged, and no sooner than a mere couple hours after Namco Bandai announced the game at a private event for arcade machine distributors earlier in the day, to boot!
Gameplay details
A number of the existing Mobile Suits from the previous game, Full Boost, have received tweaks to their attack and movement animations.
In Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Full Boost, one of the key features was that you had the option of picking from two different types of Extreme Burst (also known as Awakening) modes — an A-type Assault Burst and a B-type Blast Burst. In Maxi Boost, this will be dialled back down to a single type of Extreme Burst, just like in the original Extreme Vs.
To make up for the loss of that mechanic, however, there is a new type of Awakening mode called the EX Overdrive that will automatically kick in when certain requirements are met.
EX Overdrive comes in two flavours: the F-Drive is a melee-focused mode that lets you corner your foe with a frenzy of close-quarter attacks, while the S-Drive lets you bombard your enemy with projectile attacks.
The developers believe that the new EX Overdrive mechanic will allow losing players a chance to make a comeback. When EX Overdrive is activated, you may further ramp up your offense by activating your Extreme Burst.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost is said to feature over 110 different Mobile Suit units, some of which will have to be unlocked through winning certain battles (it is unclear at the moment if this is in the single-player CPU Battle mode, or multiplayer). There will also be new stages added, and the CPU Battle mode is said to be revamped for the better.
Other cool little touches include fighting game-style pilot intro sequences at the start of a battle. Throughout the battle, occasionally your selected pilot’s mugshot will also appear from time to time during battle, as he or she chimes in with a famous line from his or her original series.
