The third Madoka Magica movie, “The Rebellion Story” may have divided the fans thanks to Gen Urobuchi‘s brilliant story telling but one Japanese movie expert seems to be raving about it.
Enter Toshio Okada, former president and co-founder of Gainax, Osaka University professor, movie and anime critic and the man known as the “Otaking”. He gave the movie a 92/100 movie rating which is a very high grade.
Okada has given other anime and movies their grades as well. He gave the original Neon Genesis Evangelion (which was produced by Gainax) a grade of 87/100 while the latest movie version an 85/100 grade.
He also gave the original Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979 a 92, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya a 63 and the Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV series a grade of 80. The highest grade he gave was to Kaze no Tachinu by Studio Ghibli which he gave a grade of 95.
He talked about the movie as well as answered several fan questions online via Niconico. The questions were submitted my mostly students through e-mail.
Well, it’s not a secret that Madoka Magica as a series coupled with great voice acting and brilliant writing by Gen Urobuchi has become a huge hit. Fans both loved and hated its really unexpected plot twist and have really felt the despair felt by the girls in the movie. Many were quite satisfied with the movie actually, even if their reactions are mostly like this:
