Studio Ghibli‘s anime movie, The Wind Rises gets nominated for what may be the movie industry’s highest honor, the Academy Award or the Oscar Award.
The Wind Rises is renowned Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement movie and the anime legend is certainly retiring in style with the Oscar nod. The Wind Rises is nominated for the Academy’s Best Feature Film category and will go up against heavy competition with animated movies like Disney’s Frozen, Despicable Me 2, The Croods and Ernest and Celestine.
Mikayaki then issued a statement following his movie’s Oscar nomination (translated in English):
I think it is such an honor for my retirement movie, ‘The Wind Rises’ to be nominated for the Oscars’ Best Animated Feature Film. Just to be valued overseas is a huge honor for the entire staff who worked in the anime. From the very bottom of my heart, I thank the Academy for the nomination as well as everybody who helped make the film a success. It would be a pleasure for me if many people in America would get to see the movie.
Miyazaki has previously won the prestigious award last 2002 with Spirited Away becoming the only Japanese animated feature film to take home an Oscar. Spirited Away defeated some pretty big names like Lilo & Stitch and Ice Age to win the award.
The Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2, 2014.
