Magi wins best shounen manga for the 59th Shogakukan Manga Awards

The winners for the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award’s 59th edition have finally been announced with Shinobu Ohtaka’s highly acclaimed Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic and Noboro Takahashi’s crime manga Mogura no Uta winning big.

The action-packed Magi series wins the Best Shounen Manga Award this year. Magi has been extremely popular with very interesting characters and an engaging story line as well  the success of its anime adaptation which is already enjoying its second season. This will be manga author Shinobu Ohtaka’s very first time winning in the awards.

Mogura no Uta meanwhile wins the best General Manga Award. The manga will have a live action movie adaptation titled The Mole Song – Undercover Agent Reiji which will premiere February 2014. This will also be Noboro Takashi’s first time winning the award.

Kotomi Aoki’s romance manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru takes the Best Shoujo Manga Award. The manga has been adapted into a live action movie which premiered last December 2013 and starred Rurouni Kenshin‘s Takeru Satoh. This is Aoki’s second Best Shoujo Manga Award as she has won it for the first time in 2007 with Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu.

Emi Ishikawa’s Horror Manga Zekkyou Gakkyuu meanwhile wins the Children’s Award. This will be Ishikawa’s first time winning the award.

The Shogakukan Manga Awards have been held since 2005 and have been won by many legendary manga series like Fujiko Fujio’s Doraemon, Tite Kubo’s Bleach, Yumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura and InuYasha, Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk, Yoko Kamio’s Boys Over Flowers, Yudetamago’s Kinnikuman and many more.


Though these awards are by Shogakukan, mangas from other publications like Kodansha and Shueisha have also won the awards.
