During the opening salvo for this year’s Dinagyang Festival in Ilo-Ilo City, Philippines last January 17, 2014, anime fans have been treated to one big surprise when Naruto arrived along with his Shadow Clones with the Nine-tailed Fox, Kurama in tow.
A photo taken by miss Justine Christiamarie Obando during the event has gotten much attention around the Philippines, especially social media websites like facebook and twitter.
A dance troop from the tribe Tribu Paghidaet headed by Bryan Francisco and Hervin John Catolico arrived during the local fiesta’s “Pamukaw” event cosplaying as Naruto. The fiesta crowd was thrilled seeing Naruto, his Shadow Clones and Kurama and cheered them on wildly.
SGCafe has recently contacted the owner of the photo, Obando who gave a brief background of Tribu Paghidaet Naruto dance performance
The street dances by warriors wearing garb worn by the native Atis of Panay island are to show their faith and culture to Sto. Niño or the child Jesus. One aspect of the dance is that they use back drops and central props that usually carry the image of the child Jesus.
In the case of Paghidaet’s Pamukaw performance, they used the image of the Kyuubi to fit the theme since it was still the Pamukaw (Opening Salvo), they were free to showcase a variation of the usual street dances as a teaser for the main event.
Around 55 Narutos danced the traditional warrior dance with a slight Naruto variation which included the series unique running style and stances. The performance was held in front of the La Paz National High School
The Dinagyang Festival is a religious and cultural festival held in the city of Ilo-Ilo, Philippines. It celebrates the feast of the Santo Niño (Child Jesus) as well as the arrival of Malay settlers in the island of Panay.
