Nagi no Asukara or Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea to English-speaking countries has provided an intriguing and heart-rending story, a lovable cast and some of the most beautiful settings in all of anime. PA Works has done such a great job with the setting some fans have called it “Scenery Porn”.
Yet, where did PA Works get their inspiration for all these breath taking scenery for the anime? The answer lies in a port city in Mie Prefecture called Kumano which has several places which look strangely like the small coastal village of Mihama from the anime.
Here are several real-life places within Kumano that have inspired several scenes within one of PA Works’ most visually beautiful anime:

That train crossing featured in the second OP of the anime? It’s also real.
With Nagi no Asukara’s popularity, this place would surely be a likely spot for anime pilgrimages which are growing more and more popular throughout Japan. A guidebook has even been written on the subject.
Towns like Iwami (Free!) and Oarai (Girls und Panzer) have been frequented by anime pilgrims visiting the hot spots which have been featured in the anime. Other places like the Toyosato Elementary School’s old building have become more than a mere tourist destination as it also hosts events and photography sessions.
