Live action adaptations are often either a huge hit like Rurouni Kenshin and Mortal Kombat or a complete and utter miss like M. Night Shyamalan’s take on The Last Airbender, Street Fighter, Tekken and Dead or Alive which gave many audience members a very bad aftertaste.
MyNavi Student has recently conducted a survey asking which live action adaptation of anime or manga was the worst of all. With 599 respondents, here are their results:
10th: Black Butler
10th: Yatterman
10th: Space Battleship Yamato
8th: Rookies
8th: Casshern
6th: Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo
6th: Sazae-san
5th: Fist of the North Star
4th: NANA
3rd: Devilman
2nd: Gatchaman
1st: Dragon Ball Evolution
Winning overwhelmingly at number 1 is the benchmark for all bad live-action movie adaptations, Dragon Ball Evolution. The movie is so hated worldwide that it has spawned memes and has been the butt of every Dragon Ball joke out there. If one word were to describe this movie, it would be awful. Some fans are even saying that this movie almost destroyed the franchise.
Japanese fans still haven’t gotten over the #2 movie on the list, Gatchaman as the movie only premiered in Japanese theaters last year, 2013. It was predictable and has many blame the bad acting and poor directing.
The #3 bad live action movie is Devilman which is based on the classic manga and anime series of the same name. It has been ripped apart by critics for extremely bad acting, confusing story line and over dependence on CG graphics.
