Oricon has finally unveiled which 10 manga titles did the best in terms of total copies sold for the first half of 2014. The rankings were based on the Japanese manga sales from the period of November 18, 2014 until May 18, 2014.
Here are their results (The numbers presented are based on the estimated sales, not the actual number of copies sold):
10) Nisekoi
by Naoshi Komi (2,418,041 copies sold)
9) Assassination Classroom
by Yuusei Matsui (2,795,169 copies sold)
8) Silver Spoon
by Hiromu Arakawa (2,875,863 copies sold)
7) Ace of Diamond
by Yuji Terashima (2,914,977 copies sold)
6) Hoozuki no Reitetsu
by Natsumi Eguchi (3,060,694 copies sold)
5) Magi
by Shinobu Otaka (3,085,177 copies sold)
4) Naruto
by Masashi Kishimoto (3,247,920 copies sold)
3) Kuroko’s Basketball
by Tadatoshi Fujimaki (4,616,040 copies sold)
2) One Piece
by Eichiro Oda (4,936,855 copies sold)
1) Attack on Titan
by Hajime Isayama (8,342,268 copies sold)
Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan has finally broken the 5-year dominance of One Piece in these rankings by not only taking 1st place but by beating it by such a huge margin. Attack on Titan overwhelmed its competition with 8,342,268 estimated copies sold while the previously dominant One Piece only had 4,946,855 estimated copies sold.
This may be due to Attack on Titan’s recent anime adaptation which skyrocketed the series into worldwide acclaim. meanwhile, Kuroko’s Basketball, Naruto, and Magi still remain strong contenders as the other three manga round out the top 5. Naruto’s recent success may be attributed to the fact that the series is already in its “Final Battle” phase.
While nine of the titles on the list have had anime adaptations, Assassination Classroom on the other hand has proven that an anime adaptation is not needed to be included in Oricon’s Top 10 manga list as the series makes it to #9.
