Series like Sword Art Online, High School DXD, Black Bullet, Haganai, Accel World, and Oregairu have proven that light novels are just as popular as mangas and Oricon has announced the top 10 light novel series which have done well for the first half of 2014.
The rankings were based on the Japanese Light Novel sales from the period of November 18, 2014 until May 18, 2014. Here are their results (The numbers presented are based on the estimated sales, not the actual number of copies sold):
10) Date A Live

9) Accel World

8) Kuroko’s Basketball -Replace-

7) A Certain Magical Index New Testament
by Kazuma Kamachi (318,987 copies sold)
6) A Certain Magical Index
by Kazuma Kamachi (331,987 copies sold)
5) My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU/ Oregairu

4) Monogatari series
by NisiOisin (519,732 copies sold)
3) Sword Art Online

2) The Irregular At Magic High School

Both Kagerou Daze and The Irregular At Magic High School just had their respective anime adaptations premiere as part of the Spring 2014 anime season and both have already gained the top 2 spots for Oricon’s Top 10 Light Novels list, beating out favorites Sword Art Online, Monogatari, Oregairu, and the A Certain series. This just proves how popular both series are in japan even before their respective anime adaptations premiered.
Author Reki Kawahara proved his writing prowess by having two series in the top 10, namely Accel World which took the #9 spot and Sword Art online which took the #3 spot. A Certain author meanwhile took the #6 and #7 spots respectively as Kazuma Kamachi’s popular “A Certain” series proves its staying power with the recent release of the new Index movie as well as the Railgun S anime.
Monogatari and Oregairu also remained very strong contenders as both series have continued to wow readers with their engaging stories.
Oricon also released their Top 10 mangas for the first half of 2014.
