The Gundam anime franchise has not exactly been kind to female characters, with many of them getting killed off in the most violent ways possible. Often, these dead female characters give the hero more motivation after their deaths, and they would often appear near the end of the series as supports for the characters in their darkest hour.
With the Japanese Festival of the dead, Obon, already finished in Japan, the official Gundam website, Gundam.info, has recently asked which departed female character from the various series within the franchise to make a come back? With 5,681 votes, here are the results:
10) Rosamia Badam
Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta (0.6% of the votes)
9) Sarah Zabiarov
Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta (0.7% of the votes)
8) Mouar Pharaoh
Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta (1.1% of the votes)
7) Lalah Sune
Mobile Suit Gundam (3.5% of the votes)
6/5) Flay Allster
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (6.1% of the votes)
6/5) Four Murasame
Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta (6.1% of the votes)
4) Emma Sheen
Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta (8.1% of the votes)
3) Elpeo Ple (Puru)
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (10.6% of the votes)
2) Yurin L’Ciel
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE (11.5% of the votes)
1) Marida Cruz
Mobile Suit Gundam UC (51.7% of the votes)
The Universal Century has not been very kind to Puru and her clones, and two of them have made it to the top 3 of the list with the original Puru taking #3 and her most popular clone, Marida, taking the top spot. Every time a Puru dies, it is always a sad moment as they have proven to be great supports for two of the franchise’ main protagonists, Judau from ZZ, and Banagher from Unicorn, and their deaths have affected them greatly. Maybe in the future, we can see a UC series where one of these Purus actually don’t get killed off and cause heartaches for all of us.
Taking the #2 spot and driving a wedge between the two Purus is Yurin, whose death further drove Flit Asuno’s rage against Mars.
#4 meanwhile goes to Gundam MK-II Emma Sheen, who for many people should not have been killed off near the end of Gundam Zeta (then again, Zeta is directed by none other than Yoshiyuki “Kill’em All” Tomino). Several other Zeta characters have also made the list like Four Murasame, Rosamia Badam, Sarah, and Mouar.
Gundam.info seems to have left off plenty of memorable departed female characters like Stellar from Gundam SEED Destiny, Puru Two from ZZ, and of course, the entire Shrike Team which were all killed-off during the course of Mobile Suit Gundam Victory (what can I say? The entire all-female team was very memorable, then Yoshiyuki “Kill’em All” Tomino killed-off all of them)
