Initial D movie trilogy announced in new trailer

Avex Entertainment released on Tuesday a trailer for the first of three new Initial D anime movies on the trilogy project’s official website. The first film is entitled Shin Gekijo-ban Initial D Legend 1 -Kakusei- (“New Initial D: The Movie – Legend 1: Awakening”) and will hit theaters in Japan on August 23rd, 2014.

Sanzigen and Liden Films are listed as the studios involved in its production. The director for the film is Masamitsu Hidaka (The Sacred Blacksmith, Linebarrels of Iron, multiple seasons of Pokemon); Mayori Sekijima (Phi Brain, Arata the Legend, Skip Beat!) is writing the screenplay, and Akio Dobashi (Yokazura Quartet, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Gundam Seed 2nd Opening Theme) will compose the soundtrack.

Initial D, the explosively popular racing drama manga authored by Shuichi Shigeno, began its publication run in 1995 in Kodansha’s “Young Magazine” and finally ended in July, 2013. Cumulatively, the manga series has sold over 48 million copies.

The Initial D series tells the story of Takumi Fujiwara, a gifted driver who initially doesn’t care about racing, but gradually develops a sense of pride in his abilities as he defeats more and more prestigious drivers in the world of illegal Japanese street racing. The Initial D franchise has also spawned three seasons of anime adaptations, several OVAs, video games, a live action movie, and a previous anime film. There is yet another forthcoming anime series called “Final Stage” which will feature the manga’s long-awaited ending.
