High Score Girl manga goes on hiatus after SNK files charges

The popular yet controversial romantic comedy manga about 90′s arcade gaming, High Score Girl, is in hot water once again as the editor-in-chief of Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan has announced that the magazine will be going on temporary hiatus after gaming giant SNK filed a legal complaint.

SNK filed the complaint after discovering that the manga used several of its copyrights from various games such as The King of Fighters and Samurai Showdown without permission. Copies of the manga were recalled by Square Enix last week. High Score Girl also did not just use SNK’s copyrights as other fighting games such as Capcom’s Street Fighter and Darkstalkers were also blatantly used in the manga.

The manga has gained a lot of popularity in Japan, and was popular enough to have an anime adaptation greenlit. The letter by Monthly Big Gangan’s editor-in-chief did not state anything about the anime adaptation, but the publisher did state that there are “no changes” to the plans of turning the manga into an anime.
