In anime, much like other works of fiction, we often have characters we often call “butt monkeys” or “cosmic playthings” who never seem to get a break, and often have tragic endings, even if their lives were really miserable to begin with.
For this week’s Charapedia poll, the Japanese anime character database has taken a look at some “miserable” or “pitiful” heroines who led some pretty unlucky or tragic lives. Don’t worry, not everyone here is from a Key series or Madoka Magica. Here are their Top 20:

With the tearjerker ending of Your Lie in April still fresh in the minds of a lot of people, fans have voted that Kaori Miyazono is the most miserable heroine in anime… even if she does not seem like so as she often shows a brave front and a smile on her face every time she appears.
Taking the #2 spot is the yandere, Kotonoha, who had to endure getting her boyfriend cheat on her and have him lose his life because he cheated, while #3 went to MenMa, who will always be associated with anime tearjerkers.
If some of the heroines don’t seem that tragic, mainly because they seem happy on the outside, that is because many of them have tragic pasts, even if they are living comfortable lives now, much like Sakura Matou, Indez, and Tsubasa Hanekawa. Others on the other hand are from Madoka Magica so living a miserable life is a given.
