A new anime adaptation forWaki Yamato’s historical shoujo manga, Haikara-san ga Tooru, has been green-lit, and it has been announced to be an animated film, which is slated to premiere sometime in 2017. A teaser visual for the manga has also been released:
The manga is set in Taishou Era Tokyo, which is around 1912-1926, when Japan was slowly becoming a growing power in Asia. It follows Benio Hanamura, who is also known as Haikara-san, a tomboyish daughter of a high-ranking military official. She challenges the social norms of her time, in an era when women are expected to be more feminine, and she rejects the idea of arranged marriages, as she often challenges Japanese traditions for women.
This won’t be the first time the manga has gotten an anime adaptation however, as it was adapted into a TV anime which ran from 1978 – 1979. Its original source manga is considered a classic, as it is the first recipient of the Kodansha Manga Award for the Shoujo category. The manga ran from 1975 – 1977.
