In the Pokemon games, gyms and HMs like Fly, Surf, and Strength have been a staple, however, it seems that Pokemon Sun and Moon is shaking things up by seemingly replacing them with the Challenge Trials feature, as well as the PokeRide feature.
During a recent press event, gaming website, Gamnesia, recently spoke to a Nintendo representative, which confirmed something that fans have been speculating on. According to Gamnesia, “HMs and gyms, two longtime staples of the series, are both absent in Pokémon Sun and Moon. As expected, gyms have been replaced Island Challenge Trials in Alola. It’s unclear at this time how that will change the usual formula of gym badges allowing you to train your Pokémon to higher levels, but it will presumably still be a similar process.
As for the PokeRide function, it would eliminate the use of HM slaves such as Bibarel and Rattata, as it is the function which replaces the use of HMs. However, certain HM moves such as Fly and Surf will still be available as TMs.
