Remember Alola Exeggutor? How about Alola Dugtrio’s hair? How about Water starter, Poplio and its evolutions? Pokemon Sun and Moon seems to have some pretty outrageous designs, and it all seems to be a bit intentional according to the very people behind the games.
Kotaku recently interviewed Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda, producer on Sun and Moon, as well as Shigeru Ohmori, director on Sun and Moon, over the phone, and asked them about the new designs. One of the most talked about design is Alola Exeggutor, which has become an internet meme. When designing the new Alola form, Ohmori said: “When the designers first came up with the idea, the background is that the sun in Alola is so strong, that [Exeggutor] just keeps growing and growing.” They were then asked if they were just trolling people with the new Exeggutor, and to this, they said that they just wanted to have fun with the designs.
“For the 20th anniversary, we wanted to have a lot of special surprises…we wanted a funny element,” Ohmori explained. “At the same time, we had to find a balance of cool ones, serious ones. We looked at the Alola region as a whole and thought about that ecosystem.”
He also talked about the design of the newest professor, Kokui, who doesn’t seem to wear a shirt. To this, Ohmori replied “I don’t think we have the intention of making [the professors] cooler or prettier,” and then Masuda added that ‘t’s about the temperature of Alola, which seems to have a tropical climate.
Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon will both be released on November 18, 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. This will be for both Japan and North America, as the European release will be on November 23, 2016.
