Otome games, or dating simulators for women, have been getting more and more popular, as more women are getting into the Japanese anime and manga subculture. Now, a classic otome game, which was first launched back in 2011, is also getting its own TV anime adaptation, and it is Meiji Tokyo Renka.
The original otome game follows Mei Ayazuki, an ordinary high school girl who somehow meets a self-proclaimed magician named Charlie, who then transports her back in time to the Meiji era, where she can romance various historical figures from that time period.
The game was first released as a mobile game back in 2011, before getting ported to PSP. Aside from the new TV anime, they also announced a new game for the series, titled Meiji Tokyo Renka ~Dance Party~, which is slated for release next year.
It also received two anime movie adaptations, Meiji Tokyo Renka: Yumihari no Serenade, and its sequel, Meiji Tokyo Renka: Hanakagami no Fantasia. The game also received several stage musical adaptations, novels, and manga adaptations.
