As the temperature starts getting cooler and some anime ending their respective runs, the Summer 2015 anime season is now officially over. The season has introduced some plenty of great anime, but which of them are the ones which stood out the most?
Once again, we have greatly debated, argued, and battled over which anime to include in the list, and out of all of the great anime this season, we have come up with ten. Now, we only included anime which ENDED LAST SEPTEMBER, which means that anime which have yet to conclude, such as The iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls, God Eater, Working!!!, and Ushio & Tora, have not been included in our list, and without further ado, here are our picks.
Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma
Exciting cooking battles, lovable characters, a bit of fan service, and lots and lots of mouth-watering food porn, Shokugeki no Soma actually premiered back in Spring 2015, but continued its red hot streak across the summer and wowing fans.
The Heroic Legend of Arslan
Now where do we begin on how much we love this anime? Like Shoukugeki no Souma, Arslan was also a spring anime which continued onto the summer season, and for its 2-cour run, it most certainly delivered with a fascinating story about a prince’s struggle to take back his homeland. The Heroic Legend of Arslan is certainly one epic any anime fan should not miss.
School-Live!
School-Live! is responsible for what is now considered one of the greatest fake-outs in anime, and the series exceeded expectations. At first look, the School-Live! is just a typical moe anime full of cute girls doing cute stuff, but if you look under the surface, it’s a great marriage of the moe genre and the psychological genre, and add to add to that, the anime is set in a zombie apocalypse. The anime is just great and its mood swings, which often feature a happy and typical slice-of-life moment but then shifts to a thrilling zombie scene just a few minutes later is very well executed… not to mention all the plot twists and the fact that fans are now demanding a second season…
GATE
Before the anime was even aired, I have read the light novel and loved it, and when the anime adaptation was announced, I couldn’t be happier. Sure, the books have more intrigue, but what makes the Gate anime one of last season’s stand outs are not its mostly one-sided curb-stomping action, but how lovable the characters are, as well as the politics and intrigue of it all.
Seiyu’s Life/ Sore Ga Seiyuu
It is tough being a voice actor, also known as a seiyuu, and Sore Ga Seiyuu reflects the hardships of how to make it in the industry quite well. The original manga is written by an actual seiyuu, Masumi Asano, and she used her experiences in the manga and anime, and thanks to that, we are treated to some insider knowledge from the seiyuu industry. Oh, and let’s not forget all those celebrity voice actor cameos! The series is also one of this year’s most underrated anime.
Gangsta.
Manglobe may have gone bankrupt, but if if they are going down, they are going down with a bang with Gangsta. Dark and gritty, the anime explores a world filled with drugs, sex, and violence, and they did the anime beautifully.
Overlord
What happens when the characters who are often treated as the bad guys are presented as the protagonists? You get Overlord, which like many series in this list has exceeded expectations. The anime has introduced one very unique main character, and his supporting cast of evil minions are just as lovable. It’s safe to say that Overlord is one of the more intriguing titles last season.
Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace
Edogawa Ranpo has left an indelible mark in the history of Japanese literature, and Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace is inspired by this literary legend’s works and was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his passing. This murder mystery anime is filled with intrigue, deceptions, betrayals, a lolicon wearing a paper bag in head, and of course, the male main character who anyone can mistake for a girl, this anime is one of last season’s must-watch anime.
Prison School
Ahhhhhhhhh Prison School, this one is certainly very popular, and its interesting story full of PLOT is certainly one of the things which makes this anime one of the best this year. Like School-Live!, fans are certainly asking for a second season, and it’s even got a new live-action TV shoe to boot! The anime is genuinely thrilling and interesting, and if you won’t mind the copious amount of fan service and gross-out moments, this one is for you.
Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Don’t Exist
Undoubtedly, Shimoneta was last season’s most controversial anime, and rightfully so as it pokes fun at censorship, its implementation, and Japanese society in general. It also subtly questions gender roles and inequality, and even tackles the often looked-down-upon subject of males getting raped. Hey, it was so controversial that it even got complaints on a Japanese media watchdog group! That and S.O.X. is now a household name of sorts.
